General Manager Update, April 2026
Welcome to my latest update from behind the scenes at Castle View. This time, I wanted to pick out a couple of things that don’t always get talked about, but make a real difference to everyday life here – from tablecloths to classic cars and live music.
The Devil’s in the detail when setting the scene.
On paper, changing the table linen doesn’t sound very exciting. Our old cloths weren’t awful – they did the job – but they were hard to iron, all slightly different, and it was always a bit of a juggling act to find the right size for each table. Laying up for meals took longer than it should, and the room never looked quite as consistent as we wanted.
Last month we decided to sort it out properly. We measured every table, ordered cloths and runners in the sizes we actually need, chose an easy‑iron fabric and made sure we had enough spares for busy services and the odd spill. We also cleared space so each size has its own labelled shelf, instead of everything being bundled together. Now, when the team lay up, they can grab the right cloth straight away and get on with making the room look good.
Homeowners have already commented on the difference. The new colour scheme has gone down well, and there has been a lot of positive feedback about the matching serviettes and the effort that goes into dressing the room for events. The team notice it too – the set‑up is quicker, less frustrating and, frankly, a lot more satisfying when you stand back and look at the finished result.
It is a small example, but it sums up something important: we are always trying to find ways of doing things that look good for homeowners and are practical for the team to deliver day in, day out. When the basics work well, everything else feels easier.
A busy spell: old favourites and new ideas
While we have been tidying up the detail in the background, the social side of life has been getting busy again. This month brings a nice mix of “old and new”…. familiar events people look forward to, alongside something a bit different.
Drive It Day is back for its fifth year at Castle View, and it has become one of those days that really changes the feel of the building. Classic and sports cars arrive throughout the morning, there is a steady stream of visitors, and a lot of conversations start with “I used to have one of those…” or “My dad drove something similar.” Coffee and cake are very much part of the tradition too.
At the same time, we are trying something newer with our Spring Music Sessions. These are smaller, more intimate live performances for homeowners and invited guests – everything from musical theatre favourites and saxophone sets to ukulele singalongs and a string quartet. They make good use of the lighter evenings and bring a different sort of energy into the building without anyone needing to travel far.
Put together, they give a good picture of where we are trying to get to: a calendar that keeps the events people love, like Drive It Day, while also adding new things and seeing how they land. Some of you will always prefer the tried‑and‑tested; others enjoy being the first to try something new. Ideally, there is space for both.
The detail behind the atmosphere
A lot of what we do at Castle View is about this kind of detail – table linen that works properly, events that are well‑timed, rooms laid out so people can move around easily and still see and hear what is going on. When it works, it should feel natural rather than noticeable.
From my point of view, that is what “managing” the village really means: taking care of the background so homeowners can get on with enjoying the foreground – the people, the conversations and the occasions themselves.
If there is something you would like me to cover next time, or a part of life here you have always wondered about, please do let me know. These blogs are only ever a snapshot, and your questions help decide what I shine a light on next.
