International Day of Older People, is held each year on 1 October.
The UK 2026 theme, supported by the Centre for Aging Better for 2026 is “What’s on your doorstep?”….. a chance to celebrate the people, places and services that help us stay active, independent and connected as we grow older.
It is a simple question, but an important one…..
A good doorstep should open onto more than a street. It should connect you with places to go, people to see, things to do and the support you may need. And sometimes, the best things on your doorstep are already within the community itself.
At Castle View, the wider doorstep is the beautiful town of Windsor. The town centre is around a ten-minute walk away, putting shops, cafés, restaurants and centuries of history within easy reach. There are riverside walks along the Thames, performances at Theatre Royal Windsor and the open spaces of Windsor Great Park, with the Castle providing a rather special backdrop to everyday life.
The location also makes it easier to stay connected with the people and places that matter. Windsor’s two railway stations provide links towards London Paddington and London Waterloo, while the M4 is less than two miles from Castle View. Heathrow Terminal 5 is around a 20-minute drive from Windsor, with direct local bus connections too, useful for visiting family, welcoming guests or setting off on a holiday.
Of course, enjoying what is on your doorstep does not always mean going far. At Castle View, it might mean taking the lift to the bistro for lunch, meeting a neighbour for coffee, finding a quiet corner in the library or enjoying the view from the Sky Lounge and terrace.
It might also mean joining a craft or crochet afternoon, a yoga session, film night, game, talk, tasting or seasonal celebration. The events calendar offers plenty of choice, but there is no pressure: homeowners can join in when they want to and enjoy their own space when they do not.
That is one of the pleasures of community living. You can go out without really going out. A change of scene, a friendly conversation or something enjoyable to do may be only a few steps from your apartment. Coffee and camaraderie can be close at hand, while your own front door and independence remain entirely your own.
The “What’s on your doorstep?” theme also asks us to think about access. A wonderful town or busy social calendar only makes a difference if people can reach it, find out about it and feel comfortable taking part. Transport, clear information, welcoming spaces and supportive neighbours all help turn nearby amenities into genuine opportunities.
That is what makes a doorstep meaningful: not simply where you live, but how easily it connects you with people, places and the things you enjoy. From familiar faces and favourite pastimes to new experiences and the wider Windsor community, those connections can make every day feel fuller.
At Castle View, that doorstep can lead into Windsor, towards London, to Heathrow and destinations further afield, or simply down the corridor for coffee and a chat.
Sometimes, a full and connected life is closer than you think.
