A Homebuyers Introduction

We know that, even in later life, it can be quite nerve-racking moving to a new home…..so, to help you settle in, one of our homeowners has penned this useful introduction to life at Castle View…

Dear Castle View Incomers

The Low Down! Here’s an overview of Windsor, if you’re new to he area. You have a Mega-Treat in Store

Historic, pretty, interesting, friendly, buzzing. For residents and we Homeowners it behaves like a big village. Join one or two things and you’ll likely meet some of the same people in a different guise. It’s a domino effect.

Focussed on the large building built by a Frenchman in the 11th Century – thank you, William the Conqueror – edged by the River Thames and adjacent to lovely and huge Windsor Great Park, there’s never a dull moment.

There are Royal constants like the Changing of the Guard; and others, like the Welcome event of an incoming State visit, which takes turns with Buckingham Palace; the annual, international Royal Windsor Horse Show; the annual Windsor Festival of music, art and literature; racing and special events at our Racecourse; and polo in the Park.

Not only that but there’s The Theatre Royal, The Old Court arts centre, great sports and fitness facilities; courses, classes, clubs and societies galore; and many places to eat and drink, including at our very own craft brewery.

Plus we have terrific communications – two railway stations on the Paddington and Waterloo lines, the first with a six-minute shuttle to and from Slough (reputedly put in place by Queen Victoria to give her a free run for weekends at Windsor Castle); very easy links to the motorway network; Green Line buses to the metropolis and local buses, including to Heathrow. Ah yes, the airport. An American tourist, apocryphally, once said “Whoever thought of building a castle near an airport?” Hmm …!

If you like walking or riding, both are available hereabouts. For miles in Windsor Great Park, once upon a time a royal hunting ground, part of ‘Dig for Victory’ in World War II and with special features: Savill Garden – like a miniature Kew Gardens; the Valley Gardens, home to a stunning seasonal array of azaleas and rhododendrons; thriving wildlife and ancient trees; and a beautiful statue of Queen Elizabeth II on horseback, silhouetted against the horizon. Not far away are the Chiltern Hills and other areas to walk or ramble.

You and your visitors will also like easily accessible places and properties such as:

• Maidenhead Heritage Centre, with its WWII Air Transport Auxiliary memora- bilia, including the heroic pilots of both sexes. And a Spitfire Simulator – yes!!!

• Runnymede, where King John and maybe the Barons possibly had a croissant and a latte in The Magna Carta Tea Room before sorting out democracy

• The Stanley Spencer Gallery in Cookham

• The River & Rowing Museum, Henley, with its enchanting ‘Wind in the Willows’ Gallery, as well as international rowing and Thames treasures

• St Laurence’s Church in next-door Slough, with its William Herschel connections

• Chertsey Museum, holding an internationally significant costume collection

• Tudor Dorney Court, often used in filming, and its pleasant café

• The adjacent Eton College Rowing Centre, Dorney Lake, a ‘2012’ venue.

The list goes on. And with our very own optional programme of things to see and do, we’re spoilt for choice. What’s not to like!

From one of your neighbours at Castle View.
