A groundbreaking new report from YouGov has laid bare a fascinating truth about how Britons really think about ageing: we’re far more interested in maintaining what we have than chasing eternal youth.
And for those of us working in the retirement sector, that distinction couldn’t be more important, or more encouraging.
The Headlines That Matter
YouGov’s Great Britain Anti-Ageing Report 2026, published in March, reveals that just 6% of Britons actively try to slow or reverse the signs of ageing. Meanwhile, 34% say it’s important to prevent those signs, and a further 29% take what the report calls a “neutral, maintenance-led approach”.
This isn’t apathy – it’s pragmatism. The data shows that anti-ageing in Britain is less about turning back the clock and more about looking after ourselves through everyday habits. Diet, exercise and sleep are universally recognised as the most important factors, while routine skincare plays a central role. More advanced treatments? They remain firmly niche.
Here’s what else jumped out:
- Engagement is widespread, but intensity is low. Even among those who describe themselves as indifferent to anti-ageing, 36% still spend something each month on skincare, supplements or related products.
- Spending follows commitment. Among “ageing preventers”, 27% spend £25 or more per month, compared to just 8% of maintainers and 3% of the indifferent.
- The market is segmented, not siloed. People move between approaches depending on life stage, budget and personal priorities.
What This Means for Retirement Living
At Castle View Windsor, these findings resonate deeply. We’ve long believed that later life isn’t about fighting ageing, it’s about creating an environment where people can thrive regardless of the number on their birth certificate.
Karl Hallows, comments:
“This YouGov report confirms what we see every day at Castle View: people don’t want to turn back time – they want to make the most of this time. Our homewoners aren’t obsessed with reversing ageing; they’re focused on maintaining their independence, staying active, and enjoying life to the full.
That’s exactly what Integrated Retirement Communities are designed to support. We’re not selling anti-ageing miracles – we’re offering a lifestyle where people can age on their own terms, surrounded by friendship, purpose and the right support when they need it. That’s not maintenance; that’s thriving.”
The Bigger Picture
The report arrives at a pivotal moment for Britain’s ageing population. The Chief Medical Officer has repeatedly called for society to adapt to an older demographic, emphasising that expanding the period of ill health is not inevitable. Quality, enjoyment and independence should be the principal aims — words that could have been lifted straight from Castle View’s mission statement.
What’s particularly striking is how the YouGov data challenges the beauty industry’s traditional anti-ageing narrative. Britons aren’t buying into fear-based marketing; they’re taking a balanced, practical approach. This reflects a broader cultural shift, one we’ve championed through our support for the Centre for Ageing Better’s ‘Age Without Limits’ campaign and ARCO’s ‘Generation Joy’ initiative.
Ageism remains pervasive, often unnoticed yet deeply ingrained in media portrayals, workplace dynamics and everyday assumptions. But when negative stereotypes are repeated enough, they become self-fulfilling: people doubt their abilities, withdraw socially, reduce physical activity. The YouGov findings suggest Britons are pushing back against this – not by denying ageing, but by redefining what it means.
A Call to Action for the Sector
For retirement community operators, the message is clear: stop selling “anti-ageing” and start enabling “pro-living”. People want:
- Environments that support maintenance – safe, accessible homes with on-site amenities that make healthy habits easier
- Communities that foster connection – because isolation accelerates decline faster than any biological clock
- Support that’s there when needed – not as a last resort, but as an integrated part of everyday life
That’s the Integrated Retirement Community model in a nutshell. And it’s why we’re seeing growing interest from people in their 60s and 70s who recognise that downsizing isn’t about giving up – it’s about gaining freedom, security and a better quality of life.
The Bottom Line
YouGov’s report tells us that Britain is done with fighting ageing. What we want instead is simple: to look after ourselves, stay independent, and enjoy life for as long as possible. That’s not a modest ambition – it’s a revolutionary one.
At Castle View, we’re ready to support it. Because ageing without limits isn’t about staying young forever. It’s about living well, right now.
