10 Fun Activities for Grandparents and Grandchildren

National Grandparents Day has been celebrated since 2008, on the first Sunday of October.

To mark this special day, we have put together a list of 10 fun activities grandparents can do with their grandchildren.

10 Fun Activities for Grandparents and Grandchildren….

1) Baking Together

Start your Grandparents Day celebration by baking some delicious treats together. Baking is not only a fun activity, but it also teaches valuable skills like measuring, following instructions, and patience. Choose a simple recipe like chocolate chip cookies or cupcakes

Let the grandchildren help with tasks like mixing ingredients, rolling out dough, or decorating. The best part? Enjoying your freshly baked goodies together afterwards!

WHY NOT GET YOUR RECIPE PUBLISHED? SEND IT TO US AND WE COULD INCLUDE IN OUR CHARITY COOKBOOK, DUE FOR RELEASE THIS DECEMBER. FOR MORE INFO AND DETAILS ON HOW TO SUBMIT SEE HERE

2) Nature Walk and Scavenger Hunt

Take advantage of the UK’s beautiful outdoors by going on a nature walk

Create a simple scavenger hunt list before you go, including items like a yellow leaf, a smooth stone, or a pinecone. This activity encourages observation skills and provides an opportunity to teach children about local flora and fauna.

3) Create a Family Tree

Help your grandchildren understand their family history by creating a family tree together.

This can be a simple paper project or a more elaborate digital creation. Share stories about ancestors and family traditions as you work on the tree.

4) Visit a Local Museum

Many UK cities have fantastic museums that cater to all ages.

Choose one that aligns with your grandchildren’s interests, whether it’s science, history, or art. Some popular options include the Museum of Childhood in London or the Windsor & Royal Borough Museum in Windsor.

5) Have a Picnic in the Park

Pack a basket with sandwiches, fruits, and drinks, and head to a nearby park for a picnic.

Bring along some outdoor games like frisbee or a ball to play with after eating. This is a great way to enjoy the outdoors and spend quality time together.

6) Story Time and Book Exchange

Read stories together, either from your own childhood favourites or new books your grandchildren enjoy.

You could even start a mini book club, where you both read the same book and discuss it. Consider exchanging books so you each have something new to read.

7) Gardening Project

If you have a garden, involve your grandchildren in planting flowers or vegetables.

If space is limited, create a small herb garden in pots. This activity teaches children about nature and responsibility and gives them something to look forward to as they watch their plants grow.

8) Arts and Crafts Session

Set up an arts and crafts station with materials like paper, crayons, glue, and scissors.

You could make Christmas cards for family members, create scrapbook pages of family memories, or work on a painting together. This activity encourages creativity and provides a keepsake of your time together.

9) Teach a Skill or Hobby

Share one of your hobbies or skills with your grandchildren.

This could be knitting, woodworking, playing a musical instrument, or even teaching them a card game. Passing on knowledge to the younger generation can be incredibly rewarding.

10) Have a Tea Party

Embrace a British tradition by having a proper tea party. Set the table with your best china (if you’re feeling brave!), make some sandwiches and scones, and enjoy a cup of tea together. This is a great opportunity to teach table manners and etiquette in a fun, relaxed setting.

Remember, the most important aspect of Grandparents Day is spending quality time together and creating lasting memories. These activities provide opportunities for bonding, learning, and having fun across generations.

Happy Grandparents Day!
