A Virtual Tour of Frogmore House

Take a virtual tour of Frogmore House with Joshua Lovell, a lifelong Windsor resident who spent eight years working at Windsor Castle.

As a former tour guide at Frogmore House – a secluded retreat within the castle grounds – Joshua brings a wealth of knowledge about this historic royal residence.

Used by the Royal Family for over 200 years, Frogmore House is steeped in history and surrounded by beautiful gardens. Joshua’s talk will explore its fascinating past, royal connections, and architectural significance, offering a glimpse into one of Windsor’s hidden gems.

What is Frogmore House?

Frogmore House is a Grade I listed 17th-century English country house located within the Home Park of Windsor Castle, about half a mile south of the castle itself. Built between 1680 and 1684 by Charles II’s architect Hugh May, it was initially leased to tenants until Queen Charlotte purchased it in 1792 as a countryside retreat for herself and her unmarried daughters. The name “Frogmore” derives from the abundance of frogs in the marshy grounds surrounding the estate.

The house has served as a peaceful refuge for generations of royals, including Queen Victoria, who often visited and described it as “all peace and quiet.” Queen Charlotte transformed Frogmore into a botanical haven, planting rare trees and flowers while commissioning features like follies and garden pavilions. Architect James Wyatt expanded and modernized the house in the late 18th century to better suit royal needs.

Over time, Frogmore became associated with significant royal figures such as Queen Victoria’s mother, the Duchess of Kent, who lived there until her death in 1861. The estate also includes the Royal Mausoleum, where Queen Victoria and Prince Albert are buried. Today, Frogmore House remains Crown property and is occasionally used for private royal events, such as wedding receptions.

Joshua’s talk will provide an insider’s view into this hidden gem of Windsor’s royal heritage, offering historical anecdotes and insights into its architectural beauty and tranquil gardens. Perfect for those curious about royal history or seeking to uncover lesser-known treasures of Windsor!
